As the largest Secretary of State's office in the nation, the Illinois Secretary of State processes more transactions and is visited by more residents than any other.
The office, which oversees 25 different departments and nearly 4,000 employees, completes more than 30 million transactions and generates more than $3 billion in annual revenue, with more than $2.3 billion designated for state highway construction funds.
The Secretary of State also manages one of the state's largest databases, holding more than 2 billion records and keeping track of approximately 9 million drivers, 11 million registered vehicles and more than 1 million registered business entities. In addition, the office registers and monitors activities related to investment advisers, public officials and lobbyists.
The Secretary of State's office also serves to educate the public about traffic safety, impaired driving, securities fraud and financial literacy, organ and tissue donation, and voter rights and registration.
The Secretary of State's office provides security and maintains the buildings in the Capitol Complex and serves as the official record keeper of the General Assembly and the executive branch.

About The Office:
- Promotes safe driving by educating motorists and advocating for laws aimed at reducing distracted and impaired driving.
- Preserves and stores more than 75,000 cubic feet of documents and artifacts as the State Archivist and handles more than 28 million requests for information annually.
- Processes approximately 789,000 voter registration applications annually through its Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) system.
- Issues approximately 600,000 parking placards for persons with disabilities and cracks down on the illegal use and abuse of placards.
- Registers new businesses and oversees 1 million business entities, including corporations, limited liability companies and not-for-profit corporations.
- Regulates the investment industry in Illinois, investigating complaints of fraud and registering more than 200,000 securities salespersons and 22,000 investment advisors.
- Maintains the nation's largest Organ and Tissue Donor Registry, which has more than 7.5 million registrants – the most in the nation.
- Oversees approximately 150 sworn investigators comprising the Secretary of State's police force that secures the Capitol Complex, investigates automobile fraud and thefts, and operates the state's bomb squad unit.
- Serves as the State Librarian, coordinating a network of more than 1,800 libraries and in the last year awarding more than 1,600 grants to public and school libraries across the state totaling $62 million.
